Poster creation decomposes into four jobs: 1) deciding the structure, 2) writing and cutting the text, 3) preparing the figures, and 4) laying everything out on the sheet.

AI's usefulness differs sharply across these. Don't ask it to “make me a poster” in one shot — pick the right tool for each task. That's how you avoid the failure modes.

”I'm turning this study into a poster. Draft what should go in each section — background, objective, methods, results, discussion, conclusion.” Structural first drafts are exactly what generative AI is good at.

Poster backgrounds in particular tend to sprawl. Poster text gets skimmed, not read. Turning long paragraphs into terse bullets, into headings that carry the meaning on their own — this compression work is safe to hand to AI.

The standing caution applies every time, though. Check the compressed text against the original to confirm the numbers and the strength of the conclusions haven't shifted. “May suggest a benefit” shrinking into “effective” is the classic compression accident.

Your results graphs and tables must be exported from your own analysis software. Hand AI your numbers and ask it to draw the chart, and values or axis scales can shift subtly along the way.

Where AI does help is around the edges: tightening figure titles and captions, suggesting better color choices, sketching the structure of a study flow diagram. Your analysis software draws the data; AI polishes the presentation. Keep that split and you stay safe.

For layout, the realistic path is your familiar slide software — PowerPoint or similar — starting from a template at the conference's specified size (such as A0 portrait). Letting a design tool's AI features suggest colors and fonts is a fine time-saver too.

Just don't trust automated layout blindly. Can the title and conclusion be read from two to three meters (six to ten feet) away? Does the eye flow naturally from top to bottom? Those are checks for your own eyes, before anything goes to print.

Here's the checklist for the final hours before printing. Do the title, presenter names, and affiliations match your registration exactly? Is the COI disclosure formatted the way the conference requires? Does every number match the source data? Are the references cited correctly?

This final check is the one thing you must never delegate to AI. A printed poster cannot be fixed at the venue.
