What is Paperfy? An honest guide from the developers—and how it differs from Zotero and ChatGPT

If you came across the name Paperfy and searched for it wondering, "It looks like a paper management app, but what does it actually do?"—this is the official answer, written by us, the developers. Because it's official, we'll be candid not only about what Paperfy does well but also about what it cannot do and isn't built for. In about five minutes, you'll know how it differs from Zotero and ChatGPT, who it suits, and how to try it with your first paper.

In one line: a paper library that goes beyond save-and-forget

Paperfy is a web app for managing research-paper PDFs. But file storage is not the point.

We built Paperfy to turn saved papers into something you can actually read, recall, and present from. A pile of PDFs you never got around to reading; papers you did read but can no longer remember—those are the problems Paperfy exists to fix.

What it does: everything on a single page per paper

When you upload a PDF, Paperfy creates one page for that paper and gathers everything there.

Organized metadata—title, authors, journal. An AI summary. Extracted figures and tables. An infographic (a visual summary). And radio-style audio. The core design is that you can read the summary, study the figures, jump back to the original PDF, and review by audio—all without leaving that one page.

The feature we care about most: AI output is editable

There's one part of Paperfy's philosophy we especially want you to know.

Both the AI summaries and the radio scripts can be edited by hand. AI is convenient, but misreadings and misplaced emphasis are inevitable. When you spot an error, correct it—and your corrected understanding becomes your own research note. You can also regenerate the audio from an edited script. The whole system assumes a human will review and fix the output, not trust it blindly.

Your first paper: a five-minute trial

Getting started is simple.

Upload one PDF. Skim the AI summary for the big picture. Check anything that catches your eye against the original PDF on the same page. If the summary's wording doesn't match the paper, fix it and save. That's the whole loop. The AI summary is the entry point; the original PDF is the evidence. Running through this once, with a single paper, is the fastest way to understand what Paperfy is.

How it differs from Zotero and EndNote

Zotero and EndNote are powerful citation managers—building bibliographies and inserting references in Word—and Paperfy is not trying to replace them. They remain essential for anyone writing papers.

Paperfy adds the layers before and after: understanding before you read deeply, and review after. Zotero for citations, Paperfy for comprehension and review is a natural pairing (see our article on the Zotero + Paperfy workflow for details).

How it differs from ChatGPT

You can summarize papers with ChatGPT too. The difference is where the summary ends up.

A chat summary lives in your chat history, separated from the PDF. Paperfy keeps the summary, figures, original text, and review audio together on one page per paper. Use chat when you want to understand something on the spot; use a library when you want to find and use it later.

Who it's for—and who it isn't

Paperfy suits people with a backlog of unread PDFs, people preparing papers for journal clubs or conferences, and people who want to use spare moments—like a commute—for review.

It won't satisfy you on its own if your main need is automatic bibliography formatting, or if you're looking for a paper search engine. Search with the databases you already use, cite with a citation manager, and let Paperfy handle the reading in between.

Start free, with one paper

Paperfy is free to start. Try adding just one paper you've been meaning to read.

Paperfy comprehension check

  • I understand it's a paper library built to prevent save-and-forget.
  • I know that AI summaries and radio scripts can be edited by hand.
  • I understand it's not meant to replace citation managers like Zotero.
  • I can picture the first loop: summary, then original text, then correction.

Try your first paper in five minutes

Upload a single PDF and the summary, figures, original text, and audio come together on one page. Start there.
